Why We Started an SEO Company in Austin Texas
We didn't want to fix websites; we wanted to fix houses.
We were a small real estate investing company buying distressed houses, fixing them up, and hopefully selling them for a small profit.
Like so many other small businesses, maybe ALL small businesses, we kept trying different SEO businesses to get our website at the top of Google searches for people looking to sell their distressed homes in a hurry. There's a lot of competition for these homes, so if we didn't act quickly, we'd have no chance of buying these houses. Being the first to get the call from a homeowner was vital. So we knew we had to get our website to the top of Google.
We interviewed dozens of SEO companies over a couple of years, and we hired five different SEO companies over than span. One-at-a-time, of course. We had results that were the same but different. For instance, one company might get us on page one for a short time, then we'd disappear altogether.
Another SEO company would charge a whole lot of money, talk a good game, call us all the time, send beautiful, full-color reports with impressive stats, but we'd never get on page one, so the only stat the mattered, the black-and-white stat of how many times the phone rang, was zero.
Another SEO company failed to rank us, but we were getting lots of calls, so we would scratch our head, but we were happy with the calls. Until, that it, one day we noticed that WE had an add at the top of Google! This company was just running ads, which is something we could do ourselves, but we knew that SEO would get free clicks for years if done right, and ads, of course, stopped working if you stopped paying. We didn't hire an ad agency, we hired an SEO agency.
Frustration Led Us to Study SEO Techniques
Out of frustration, we began to learn SEO techniques on our own. We were lucky to be in Austin, near a Google office, because Google would routinely hold free seminars and workshops. The workshops were really about Adwords, but Google reps were very helpful with SEO questions.
We also purchased programs and learned SEO from different "gurus" selling training.
We began implementing what we learned and quickly ranked our site. We couldn't believe how simple it was.
Simple - not easy.
After all the training and advice, some good, some bad, and some very bad, we figured out that all Google was trying to do is give the person searching on Google the best site for what they were looking for. If we could show Google that their users would find the answers they were looking for on our site, and prove to Google that we were a reliable source for that information, Google would reward us by sending their users to our site when their searches were relevant to our content.
Simple, not easy.
Once we learned to eliminate the noise from people giving bad advice about how to "trick Google's algorithm" which may work in the short term but always backfires in the long term, we found that we were consistently able to rank websites for our friends in any niche and any town.
Time to Do SEO for Small Businesses Full-Time
Once we got the hang of it, we realized that SEO was a craft we enjoyed and that by starting an SEO company we could help small businesses obtain growth beyond their wildest expectations while working to make the "fake" SEO companies, who took so much of our money, obsolete.
